It takes rain to make the flowers grow

Grandmother Bessie was an excellent gardener.  Grandmother was very knowledgeable about plant varieties, growing conditions, diseases, insects, and harvesting.  As a child I enjoyed sunny days.  One day when it was raining and I was forced to play inside and complaining about the rain, Grandmother Bessie looked at me and said:  "it takes rain to make the flowers grow."
